Digital Versatile Disc (Digital Video Disc)

Ten companies started the DVD Consortium and created the UDF(Universal Disc Format); Hitachi, JVC, Matsushita(Panasonic), Mitsubisihi, Pioneer, Phillips, Sony, Thomson, Time Warner and Toshiba.

DVD-R was developed by Pioneer and is supported by the DVD Consortium with backward compatibility to the CD-ROM standard for addressing and error correction. Called DVD"dash R" in the US and DVD"minusR" elsewhere in the world. The rewritable version was actually the last approved.

DVD+RW was developed by Dell, HP, Mitsubishi, Philips, Ricoh, Sony, Thomson, Yamaha and introduced a different form of addressing and error correction, both superior to the DVD-R standard and actually the rewritable was a standard before the once-writable. It started out as the property of the DVD+RW Alliance. A DVD+R can be labelled as DVD+RW because of this, so care must be exercised. Now recognized also by the DVD Consortium, it is a standard and most machines will read/write both since 2004.

There is a category listed that is the binary version of the megabyte and the gigabyte, called the mebibyte and gibibyte. These are not new by any means and apply to physical storage devices. That is why a hard drive rated at a certain size is seen as smaller by the computer. This differs from RAM memory which has always used this binary formula. It is the difference between 1000 and 1024 raised to the 2^nd and 3^rd powers.
