xDSL Forward

Kind Readers,

The saga continues. Three varieties of "Consumer" DSL now on the horizon. First was Rockwell with CDSL. Then Nortel entered with DSL-Lite. Now Netspeed has its version called EZ-DSL.

The Netspeed version has ADSL speeds possible and they say that by March they will offer a modem with a price comparable to a high-end 56k modem that will give up to 7 Mbit speeds in an internal card that does not require a splitter to separate the voice traffic from the digital traffic. We'll see, I guess!

Ameritech and Microsoft are working on drivers for the coming equipment. Ameritech has introduced service in Michigan and says they will introduce it in Chicago next year.

Some companies are also doing what is called a BAN (Building Area Network) in major metropolitan areas. It is easier to administer the traffic when it is restricted to a building. New York and Marina Del Ray that I know of.

Netspeed for the EZ-DSL modem
